NATIONAL BIKINI DAY: THE BIKINI TURNS 70!

Posted on 25 June 2017

Where would be be without French designer, Louis Réard? Réard created the skimpy bikini and debuted it at a Parisian pool party on this very day in 1946. Keep in mind, before the bikini, girls were wearing things like this:

So you can only imagine the controversy surrounding this “revealing” swimsuit. Réard found it difficult to find a normal gal to sport his creation so the bikini made its debut on a stripper, Micheline Bernardini. The name Bikini comes from the term Bikini Atoll, where the post war testing of the atomic bomb wast taking place.

The bikini was an instant hit and started immediately sweeping the beaches of Europe. It took some time for the prudish United States to warm up to the bikini but they eventually came around to it in the 1960’s (thank god!) and has continued to grow in popularity ever since.

Check out our brief bikini timeline of some of the most amazing images we could find from the early 1900’s and on!
